All roads lead to Ljubljana

I’ve loved Slovenia and I’m sad to leave. However I feel like it’s worth noting the con that is this country. It’s quite genius really. They’ve convinced the world that they’re a cheap holiday destination – then you arrive… Regardless it’s not the most expensive place in the world and at least the drinks are cheap.

Between our nights in the lakes and our trip to Croatia we decided we’d go back to Ljubljana. Something I was very happy with as I felt I hadn’t completed the experience.

We arrived early evening and headed to the shop to get some dinner. After a lengthy sit down and chat over food we headed into the city. There’s a bar on top of skyscraper that we managed to get a table at – surprisingly not even that busy for sunset. We took in the views of the city from above.

When we left Bohinj we ran into a friend of Chris’ from his train club. (Sheffield has a way of following you around it seems. It’s fitting as well that it would be someone from that stupid train club. I swear one in every few engineers at Sheffield works on that glorified model railway.) I’d never met Olly as he’s in the year above, but he was a nice lad. After finishing at the skyscraper we headed down to the river to meet him for a drink. Olly told us his travel stories of hiking around Slovenia, it all sounded very interesting. He even told us about his year in industry – a placement at a mining company in Canada.

We chatted with Olly for a couple hours before the pub shut down. Up until midnight the streets of Ljubljana’s old town had been full of people, as soon as the clock hit 12 though it was empty. With not much else to do we headed back to the hostel where we were greeted with the loudest snorer I’ve ever heard. Apparently it was much worse once I fell asleep and began harmonising…

In the morning we headed back to the river, enjoyed a cheap coffee. Then headed to a restaurant. I tried the classic Slovenian dish, joka. Personally I thought it tasted like vomit but the girls enjoyed it. Eva claims it might become her newest staple at uni – I’m not sure myself. For desert I had a dumpling, another classic we’d be told about on our tour last week. It was very nice but very rich.

Sloveniya later anyway. I’ve loved this country and I hope I can come back at some point in my life.
