Cave the Way

Postojna has been one of the best places so far. One week in and I’ve been to 5 different cities – this has been the most relaxing so far.

Our first night was a calm one. We went and bought food for dinner, cooked, relaxed and chatted outside. We even met a man who proudly told us how he was the 2 time champion of cheerleading in Poland – with a son who’s a barber in Walsall.

The next day we started slow but still managed a hike up a hill before lunchtime. The ruins of a small castle. It gave a great view of the small town of Postojna. We then headed to the real reason we’d come to this otherwise quite unassuming town – the caves.

The caves stretch for miles underneath the area and are full of beautiful stalagmites. It is honestly one of the best and most impressive things I’ve ever seen. A train took us down to the caves and then a hour long tour around the caverns showed us all sorts of interesting formations. The caves are even used to host concerts from time to time. 60 metres below you’re cut off from the world and truly in your own zone – there’s still a gift shop though.

After heading back to the surface we headed for some coffee in the town square where they were setting up for a music event later that evening. We headed back to the hostel for dinner planning to return.

In the evening we headed to a bar where we could hear the performance. It was a very nice backdrop to the evening. The Slovenian beer is very refreshing and also cheap. We were very happy to stay out chatting till we were the last ones in the square. Overall a very enjoyable day and so far my favourite of the whole trip.
